Highlights from the First Week of School! 
  • Getting to know each other through activities, group work and games! We welcome all the families who are new to AFS!
  • Playing math games and reviewing number concepts, such as place value, estimation and even/odd numbers.
  • Writing letters to share more about ourselves. We also read the book "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" and talked about the fiction and non-fiction elements of the book. We began planning our own stories based on the book.
  • Starting our class read-aloud novel, "My Father's Dragon."
  • We created name tags using "Roman" font and these will be displayed when you come for conferences. 
  • Creating "footprint" art and discussing line, negative space and warm colours.
  • Students completed a Reading Interest Survey to tell me a few things about them as a reader. We discussed how we feel when we read, what kind of topics they enjoy reading, if they like any series of books etc. 
Reminders:
  • Students wrote important events on their September calendar in the agenda yesterday.
  • Alisha Elchuk has kindly offered to be our Room Parent for the year! I have sent out an email to parents confirming that I have the correct email on file. If not, could you please write which email you would like me to use for the year in your child's agenda. Alisha will help me out with sending emails in the next coming weeks about field trip opportunities. 
  • We will go swimming on September 24, 25, 26, 30, October 1 and 2. We will need 3 volunteers from Room 5 each morning. If you can volunteer for one or more days, please let me know. We will need at least one male volunteer per day to supervise the boys change room.
  • Scholastic book orders went home yesterday. This is a completely optional program, and students do not need to participate. If you would like to order books, please place the orders by Wednesday, September 11. Orders can be placed online at https://canadaclubs.scholastic.ca/en/home or by returning the order form with a cheque made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd.

Just a reminder that we will have a Google Meet with our class at 10:00am today.  How to access Google Meet was sent through email to you.  Two ways you can access are: 1. Through a link I will post on here and in my Google Classroom  2. Type in classroom code/nickname that I will post on here and Google Classroom Hoping to see everyone there!  When using Google Meet, we all agree to: 1.       Join the Google Meet on time 2.       Respect each other’s  i deas, opinions, appearance, privacy, and work. 3.       Pay attention to the conversation (avoid distractions). 4.       Listen to each other before inputting ideas. 5.       Only 1 person talking at a time. 6.       Dress in appropriate clothing. 7.       Leave the Meet at the end of the lesson. Seeds for Science

Hello parents! If you are outside this weekend/week with your child, please look for seeds to bring in to class next week. Students can look for seeds in the wild or in their yards. We are looking for a wide variety of seeds, so they can also bring in seeds from fruit/vegetables in the kitchen or from seed packets. Please label the seeds in a bag, if you know what type of seeds they are. We will collect the seeds all next week to use during science for our Plant unit this month. Thank-you for your help!

Hello Parents and Students, We hope you are well and have had a relaxing spring break.   For the foreseeable future, together we are traveling into the world of online learning.  We thank you for your ongoing patience as we navigate this new journey and continue to take up the Alberta Program of Studies.  We will be providing learning opportunities & activities soon. Your child’s homeroom teacher will connect with you to discuss your child’s access to technology at home, including access to a computer and the internet.  Teachers will email students/parents or by phone call. We are also making a plan to address the needs of students without these resources and to determine how to support students with paper packages. Teachers will also ask you how you and your family are doing and encourage you to connect with wellness supports and resources available within and beyond the CBE.
