November 15

  • No school on Friday, Nov.22.
  • We are starting our new science unit "Testing Materials and Designs". We will be looking for donations of any "unique" pieces of cardboard, such as paper tubes (not toilet paper rolls) or cubes, prisms, etc.
  • The last book orders of the year will be due Nov.21 so that they arrive before Christmas. If you want to purchase a book as a Christmas gift for your child, let me know and I can hold onto the book until you are able to pick it up: Scholastic
  • Watch for more details coming soon about our holiday concert on Dec.10.
  • Homework:
    • Spelling on Wednesday, Nov.20.
    • Continue to review addition and subtraction basic facts. Quick recall of these facts help students when working with larger numbers. Grade 3 students need to add and subtract to 1000, and grade 4 students need to add and subtract to 10 000. Let me know if you want some suggestions of how to support your child with addition and subtraction at home.
    • As you drive around Calgary with your child, look for and discuss different bridges in the city. We will be learning about bridges in science and each student will chose one bridge for an art project in the coming weeks.

Highlights:

  • Learning about bar graphs by recording different plant uses. We also are learning how to find the perimeter of flat shapes.
  • Learning about the different regions of Alberta and which crops are best suited for each region. We will continue our research of Alberta's regions next week.
  • Discussing what we know about the suitability of these materials for building: wood, paper, plastic and metal. Students are exploring these materials and experimenting with the best uses of each. Next week, our focus in science will be on the durability, stability, and functionality of these materials.
  • Continuing to practice describing emotions and objects through showing not telling.
  • Beginning to play floor hockey in Phys.Ed.
  • Exploring and discussing different genres of books.
  • Preparing for the Christmas concert with Ms. Enns, our music teacher.
